What are our best tips for choosing referees on a job application?
Choosing the right references is among the most crucial components of the job search. Your qualifications and capacity for the position should be attested to by your references. By selecting the correct references, you can show a potential employer that you have the knowledge and expertise necessary to succeed in the position.
How to Prepare
Before you apply for a position, at a minimum compile a list of three references. Some positions may require more, but at least you will be prepared.
When selecting your references compare your references with the needs of the position. Consider whose testimony would be the strongest.
Prior to submitting an application, be sure to let them know what position you are seeking for as well as the essential abilities and accomplishments required. This will ensure they will be suitably ready when your prospective employer calls.
Who to ask?
Former supervisors, co-workers, contacts in business or the professional world, and academic references. Avoid choosing family members and go with individuals who will give you solid endorsements.
How to ask?
Some references might not have the time to assist or may not feel ready to provide you with a sufficient recommendation. Try not to use language that would pressure them, and instead ask "Do you feel comfortable providing a reference for me"? Depending on the nature of your connection, you can ask via phone, email, or LinkedIn. Make sure to give them adequate information about the position you are applying for and above all, express gratitude for their time.
